Welcome to
Pinecone Bend.
Where the maples turn gold, the lake goes quiet, and someone always waves from the porch.
At the bend in a quiet lane, just beyond the last big maple, sits a small green workshop. The door sticks a little in winter. The kettle whistles a little too loudly. And the smallest pair of work boots in the neighborhood is usually sitting on the step.
That’s where you’ll find Hugo: leaf tuft slightly crooked, pencil tucked into a pocket, ready to lend a paw.
Hugo notices the things most pass by. The pencil marks on a kitchen doorframe. The porch step that squeaks in exactly the same place. The garden somebody planted one hopeful spring. To Hugo, a house is full of stories long before anyone puts a price on it.
02 / THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL
First, pull up
a chair.
The workshop has jars of mismatched screws, a well-worn toolbox, and a rule written nowhere: listen before reaching for a tool.
One autumn afternoon, a neighbor arrived with a wobbly chair and a much bigger worry. The old family home had become too much to look after. Hugo set down the sandpaper, put the kettle on, and pulled up the spare chair.
The chair could wait. The neighbor couldn’t.
By the time the leaves outside had settled, the worry felt a little smaller. Nothing magical had happened. Someone had simply made room to listen.
